What Are the Penalties for Late Corporate Tax Return Filing in the UAE?

Filing your corporate tax return on time is one of the most important compliance requirements for businesses in the UAE. Whether operating under a UAE free zone license or a Dubai mainland license, companies must submit their corporate tax returns to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) within nine months after the end of their financial year. Failing to meet this deadline can lead to penalties that increase the longer the delay continues.

According to the FTA, if a company misses the filing deadline, it will face a penalty of AED 500 per month for the first 12 months of delay. If the company still fails to file after one year, the fine increases to AED 1,000 per month from the 13th month onward until the return is submitted. These penalties apply even if the business owes no tax, as the obligation to file remains mandatory. The purpose of these fines is to encourage timely compliance and accurate reporting.

In addition to late filing penalties, if a company delays payment of the corporate tax due, it may also be charged monthly interest at 14% per year on the outstanding amount. The longer the delay, the higher the total cost to the business. Repeated late filing or payment may also raise the risk of audits or further administrative actions by the FTA.

To avoid such penalties, companies should organize their accounting records early, reconcile all financial data, and prepare the return well before the deadline.
